Renowned gaming powerhouse Asus’s latest ROG Phone was one of the first handsets to introduce Snapdragon 8 Elite, the super powerful chip from Qualcomm

I’ve been testing the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition, the phenomenal mobile gaming powerhouse that was released late in 2024.

The benchmark scores are a match for Apple’s iPhone A18 Pro SoC which still has a slightly higher single-core score. But ROG Phone 9 Pro wins easily on multi-core scores and beats the iPhone on both graphics and stress benchmark tests. AI functions such as Circle to Search, live translation during phone calls, live transcript and AI wallpapers are featured.

The screen’s touch sampling rate is an impressive 720Hz. This means it is super responsive to all inputs. AeroActive Cooler X also provides a kickstand and passthrough USB-C that enables lengthy gaming sessions in which you can power the device as you play. This helps demanding titles such as Genshin Impact achieve constantly fast frame rates on the highest level graphic settings.

X Mode's primary use is to boost the phone's performance to the maximum, which affects both battery life and temperature and provides access to additional features such as the AirTriggers. There's a built-in screen recorder that supports inline sound, a widget to display your stats while gaming and a handy list of high refresh rate games.

The main 50MP camera uses a capable Sony Lytia 700 sensor and has 6-axis gimbal stabilisation. It produces pleasing images in decent lighting conditions. There’s also a 32MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, a 13MP ultrawide and a 32MP selfie camera.Other features There is face unlock and a fast and reliable under-display fingerprint sensor. You get dual-SIM support but in Europe there’s no e-SIM support.
