Speaking to Joe Duffy on tonight’s The Meaning Of Life on RTE One, Ricky Tomlinson paid tribute to the late star, describing her as 'very, very generous'

Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson has opened up about the death of his co-star Caroline Aherne – and why they shed real tears during one of the show’s most famous scenes.Speaking to Joe Duffy on tonight’s The Meaning Of Life on RTE One, Ricky paid tribute to the late star, describing her as "very, very generous".

Sitting on the bathroom floor as she went into labour, Denise sobbed with only dad Jim, played by Ricky, to comfort her, putting his arms around her, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead and telling her everything would be OK.Talking about the iconic scene, he told Joe: "Caroline was crying because I think she desperately wanted children, she really, she didn't have any. And she spoke.

He also talks about his friendship with the late Des Warren, who he had campaigned tirelessly for after his death. "Me and Des made a pact. We wouldn't wear clothes. We wouldn't work and we wouldn't soldier…we wouldn't do it. And then eventually we ended up on hunger strike for 31 days. And I was pretty ill and so like, I ended up in the hospital in the prison you know.

"So, I got out of bed and I laid down…on this brick has had written in pencil, ‘The darkest hour of your life will only last for 60 minutes’, and that was like giving me a boost. "I said I'd made a pact with him. He said 'you can't tell him. You know what he is?' 'So,' he said. 'Write him a letter.' So, I wrote him a letter. Said, Dear Des, look, we've had a good go and we've done this and we've done that. We've done the other. I'm missing the kids and so I'm going to. I think I'm going to get off and then I think you should do the same. And I sent him. I sent him the letter.
