RTE lost out on Premier Division games to Virgin Media Television but can still pitch for the FAI Cup

But league director Mark Scanlon says a game per round of the competition will be the FAI’s “starting point” in any negotiations.

RTE had planned to show 20 live league games this season, but League of Ireland clubs favoured the deal tabled by Virgin Media. League of Ireland director Scanlon said: “The FAI Cup rights have not been sorted yet for this year. That will be decided in the next couple of weeks. “I think they have done a fantastic job with the Sports Direct men and women’s FAI Cup over the last number of years.

In early January, RTE sent out a press release detailing their plans for sports coverage over the next 12 months. “We had no significant worries about that at the time. RTE were in the mix and involved in the conversations right up until the broadcast contracts were confirmed.
