RTÉ has issued a €240,000 tender request for an “infrastructure equipment refresh” for its controversial RTÉ Player. The beleaguered player has been sharply criticised for its functionality and has received a plethora of complaints.
A spokeswoman for RTÉ told the Irish Mirror that the tender was “for vital back-end infrastructure which provides live video encoding to RTÉ Player as well as other video platforms”. The RTÉ Player has long been criticised for its lack of functionality and tendency to crash after playing advertisements. Speaking at the Oireachtas Media Committee last July, RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst admitted to politicians that the national broadcaster “urgently need to invest in digital products such as upgrading the RTÉ Player, the news app and a new audio app”.
