Ireland implements a new speed limit of 60km/h on rural roads, aiming to improve safety after statistics revealed a high number of fatal crashes on these roads. The government also plans to reduce speed limits in urban areas, town centres, and housing estates, while national secondary roads will see a decrease from 100km/h to 80km/h. However, the exact implementation date for these changes remains unannounced.
New road signs reflecting the lower limits will replace existing ones.
“On this, there is no question. Too often, families across Ireland are faced with the devastating news that they have lost a loved one on the roads. The Kerry TD added: “The government must also get serious about education, enforcement and road maintenance. These are the primary foundations of all good road safety campaigns, but we are not seeing a focus on these factors.“Despite local authorities crying out for more resourcing to maintain local roads for years, the government has turned a blind eye.
It comes as the Irish Road Haulage Association President Ger Hyland declared “simple common sense” was needed along with “proper enforcement” instead of new speed limits.Mr. Hyland, whose organisation represents 4,000 licenced hauliers throughout the country who run 40,000 trucks, declared speed limits are useless if nobody is going to enforce them and said younger drivers should be monitored.
