The charter amendment also comes with a budget ask from the city, Tomas said. They want to see the creation of a justice director position to oversee the implementation of the new policies.But Tomas is betting that putting tangible issues on the local ballot will bring out more people — she hopes in support. National polls have shown abortion mobilizing voters across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade and sending regulation back to the states.

Tomas thinks the charter amendment will have support among City Council members. The council has already brought forth a cite-and-release policy for marijuana, even if expanding citations to other crimes has proven controversial. And a majority showed support for abortion access with their August vote on the resolution.
