Rob Farrell and Finn Drysdale are on Maui, where at least 96 people have been killed and more than 1000 are still missing

Two Scots brothers caught up in devastating wildfires that have destroyed parts of an Hawaiian island have told of the apocalyptic scenes they witnessed. .

Finn 17, is on holiday in Lahaina before going back to school. More than 2700 buildings in the town have been destroyed but only three per cent of the charred properties have been examined so far. The wildfires – the deadliest to hit the US in more than a century – came as soaring heat, kindling dry conditions, and hurricanes swept across the island.

“They got out quickly as the fires were getting closer and went back to Rob’s house, which is outside the town, then watched it burn from the distance. Because there was a complete power failure, we didn’t hear from them for what felt like ages. It was a difficult few days.” "Her library is also away, and the museum. Yet they consider themselves lucky. Their house is fine and Rob’s restaurant is still standing.

“One man who works for Rob had been in the ocean for 11 hours. People were jumping into the sea to escape the flames but a lot of boats in the harbour went on fire and those in the water were getting hit by debris. Karen said: “They are the kind of kids who will deplete their savings and go without. But there are two hurricanes on the way – that’s really worrying for everyone over there.”
