Seagull 'territory wars' and the fight to save Blackpool's birds
For Mel and Justin Greenhalgh, the cycle of animals needing their help never ends. Mel set up the centre after she started fostering baby birds in lockdown. Now she and her husband serve the birds and animals of Blackpool around both of their full time jobs.
"Poor Vic was the was the victim of that. He'll probably have to go for sanctuary release because he'll be completely blind on one side. Our vet it going to take out what's left of his eye this week. He's still got a good nip on him though." "Because they're so good at camouflaging problems so that they don't look weak to the predator, it also means that people don't find them until the last minute."
She aid: "To be honest with you, that getting a little tearful about a woodpecker that's gonna have to be put to sleep today. There's good days and bad days, to be honest with you. It's tough. I mean, you've got to keep focused on the ones that you know will go and be released. "When she came in, I honestly thought she wouldn't make literally, I thought she would die in my hands but we worked on through the night and then the next morning she was breathing and now she's never shuts up."
