The heritage site in Fleetwood is worth a visit
A walk along the seafront can throw up a number of delights. From the sounds ot eh waves lapping on the shore, a friendly dog bounding up to say hello or simply that feeling of the sands between your toes. There's often so much to see, it's easy to become distracted and not realised you may be waking through something significant.
In this case, it could be Larkholme Grasslands in Fleetwood. The Biological Heritage Site is 1.5kilometres long and may just look like any other green space at first glance, but in reality, it has plenty to explore and discover. Visitors will see a number of tall multi-coloured aluminium beacons located at the entrance. Designed by British sculptor Stephen Broadbent, the dramatic beams with a variety of patterns, are designed to resemble blowing grass blades and to encourage people to reflect on the ecological heritage of the site. The grasslands, which stretch from Westway to Fairway on the Fylde Coast, have rare species of flora and fauna growing there.
The versatile ecology park attracts a variety of wildlife and is home to many plants and insects, thanks to the original blend of seeds, which were planted in intervals between June 2017 and May 2018, due to coastal weather conditions. There's also hand-carved wooden art installations along the strip of land, which were designed by Fleetwood schoolchildren during artist workshops, hidden in the tall grass to discover.
