Gardai have foiled a second alleged murder attempt on an associate of murdered Dublin man Cormac Berkeley.

Garda i are questioning two suspects after elite detectives foiled an alleged hit on an associate of this murder victim – for the second time in three years. Sources have confirmed to us that the major operation in west Dublin on Tuesday night prevented an imminent murder bid on the associate of Cormac Berkeley, who was himself shot dead in the same area almost exactly two years ago.

Mr Berkeley, 37, was murdered in Clondalkin on December 5, 2022 – and that’s the same part of Dublin where two men were caught allegedly preparing to murder an associate of his on Tuesday. Sources say the associate survived a previous hit in 2021, a year before Mr Berkeley was shot dead. Nobody has been charged over Berkeley's murder. On the 2021 occasion, gardai from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau stopped a car in south Dublin as it was headed to the west of the city as part of a plot to kill Berkeley’s associate. Several people were later caged over that incident – and the same Garda unit moved in on Tuesday to save the life of the target for the second time. Officers from DOCB, as well as the Emergency Response Unit, were involved in foiling the latest alleged threat to the Berkeley associate. Armed ERU officers stopped a car on Rowlagh Avenue in Clondalkin just after 8pm – and recovered the deadly Glock semi-automatic pistol as well as ammunition. Two men, who are believed to be from the Clondalkin area, were arrested in the swoop - and were still being questioned on Thursday afternoon. They are being held under anti-gangland legislation and can be detained for up to a week. On Wednesday, some 300 gardai were involved in follow-up operations in 18 different locations in Dublin – as well as at the top security Portlaoise Prison in Co Laoi
