Seven children died while under the care of Tusla, Ireland's child and family protection agency, in the past three years. Causes of death varied, including natural causes, suicide, and accidental death. Tusla confirmed the deaths and stated that each case was thoroughly investigated. In addition, five young people in mainstream care and 30 Separated Children Seeking International Protection (SCSIP) have gone missing. The agency highlighted the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Drogheda boy Kyran Durnin, who is listed as missing presumed dead.
Seven children have tragically died while under the care of Tusla in the past three years. This heartbreaking revelation comes as Tusla , the child and family protection agency, confirmed the deaths and disclosed that each case was thoroughly investigated by the National Review Panel. A full report was conducted for every death.
Details about the deceased children reveal a range of ages: one child was between one and five years old, five children were between 11 and 16 years old, and one was in the 17 to 20 age bracket. The causes of death varied; four children died of natural causes, two tragically took their own lives, and one death was deemed accidental. Adding to the agency's concerns, Tusla reported that as of January 16th, 2025, five young people in mainstream care had been reported missing. Disturbingly, one of these five missing individuals had made contact with professionals or carers since their disappearance. All five young people have been missing for a period ranging from one to three days. The disappearance of Drogheda boy Kyran Durnin remains a particularly agonizing case. Tusla and the Gardai (Irish police) list him as missing presumed dead. Despite a full-scale murder investigation, Kyran's body has not yet been found. It is believed he was six years old when last seen alive in June 2022. Officially, he will not be declared dead until his body is recovered and a death certificate is issued. In a statement addressing the tragic deaths, Tusla emphasized the profound impact these losses have on families, friends, and the care workers who were connected to the children. They stated that many of these children were also known to other support services, highlighting the widespread ripple effect of these tragedies. All deaths of children in care are reported to the National Review Panel (NRP), an independent body that investigates the circumstances surrounding each death. Tusla also revealed that 30 Separated Children Seeking International Protection (SCSIP), mostly over 16 years old, were reported missing as of January 16th, 2025. Some of these young people communicate their intentions to travel to other countries to join family members, while others indicate they never intended to stay in Ireland. Tusla pointed out that even those who later inform them of their whereabouts are initially counted as missing, and An Garda Siochana is promptly notified.
