Sean Maye has become the seventh person to suffer a fatal accident on a 6.5km section of the N17 road outside Claremorris, Ireland, in the past year. This stretch of the national primary road, which links counties Sligo and Galway, has seen 12 fatalities in the last eleven months. The latest tragedy occurred in the townland of Corbally, near the site where Una Bowden and her daughters Saoirse and Ciara tragically lost their lives last March. The coroner, Pat O'Connor, described these events as an 'unspeakable tragedy,' and emphasized the need for a dual carriageway to prevent further accidents.

Despite the N17 being one of the better roads in the region, it has witnessed a series of “horrific” tragedies, Mr O’Connor said. “The N17 is substandard and needs to be upgraded for economic reasons and for health and safety reasons”.
