A reader asks if guinea pigs make good pets and whether they are available for adoption...
My 11-year-old daughter wants a pet. I don't think we have time for a dog or cat, but we have discussed getting a guinea pig. Do you think this would be a good pet for her? Is there any place in San Antonio where we can adopt one?Guinea pigs make great pets for older children, and they are less of a time commitment for families than cats or dogs.Guinea pigs are great pets for 11-year-old kids.
You can adopt one from Second Chance Cavy Rescue. They foster unwanted guinea pigs and educate potential adopters on the proper care, housing and nutrition for these amazing animals. Cavies often are adopted in same-sex pairs, which I recommend, so the guinea pig has a friend to hang out with when you guys are not home.Dear Cathy,
Please tell your readers to contact San Antonio Animal Care Services or the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department if they have been bitten or scratched by an animal of unknown vaccination status. They will help with the treatment and pick-up and testing of animals. The doctor who told the patient that nothing could be done to help needs to go back to medical school . Also, please caution your readers not to handle bats or any wild animals that seem tame.
