The Sinn Féin spokesman on Finance, Pearse Doherty, has told an annual gathering of economists that his party, if elected, would tax fairly and spend wisely.
In a wide-ranging speech to the Dublin Economics Workshop, deputy Doherty said his party's priorities when it comes to the economy are housing and childcare.
Pearse Doherty told his audience at the Dublin Economics Workshop that contrary to some recent discussion, Sinn Féin was not moving to the centre but that the centre"has moved decisively towards Sinn Féin." He outlined the party’s priorities in the areas of housing and childcare promising that if the party was elected, it would introduce the biggest public housing programme in the history of the State.
In answers to questions from the floor, he said reform of the planning process and the possible use of emergency powers would need to be considered to address the housing crisis. On the public finances, deputy Doherty said the party would spend around"€2billion a year more" on capital investment in relation to housing but would not use the windfall gains from corporation tax to fund current expenditure.He also said Sinn Féin would introduce legislation to give unions the right to represent workers in companies.
