Keir Starmer emphasizes Ukraine's crucial position in peace negotiations and potential UK involvement in peacekeeping efforts following Trump's unauthorized talks with Putin.

Keir Starmer has stressed that Ukraine must be at the forefront of any peace talks and should not be sidelined in discussions regarding its future. During an interview with ITV on Thursday, Starmer emphasized the need for a clear and irreversible path towards Ukraine 's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ), a US-led military alliance.

He also indicated openness to the possibility of British troops participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, stating that if peace is achieved, a robust security guarantee is essential for Ukraine, and the UK will contribute to securing this. Starmer's comments follow an announcement by former US President Donald Trump regarding his engagement in peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which reportedly occurred without the involvement or consent of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This development triggered immediate concerns within the UK Parliament, leading to urgent questions posed in the House of Commons and a swift statement issued by the parliament's defense committee. The committee urged European nations to increase their direct involvement in providing defense support for Ukraine.Tan Dhesi, the chair of the defense committee, underscored the expectation that the UK government would demonstrate strong leadership in this matter. He warned that a failure to support Ukraine would embolden Russia. Dhesi further suggested that Britain should be prepared to deploy peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, establishing a comprehensive military presence encompassing land, sea, and air operations to safeguard the invaded nation's security. Shadow defense secretary James Cartlidge initiated the urgent question to the government, which was represented in the House of Commons by junior defense ministers as the defense secretary, John Healey, was attending a NATO meeting in Brussels. Cartlidge implored the government to caution other NATO members that any perception of victory by Putin and Russia in a settlement would only create a facade of peace, ultimately leading to renewed danger in the future. He emphasized that such a scenario would not enhance global security.
