Following the ramming, one gate had come completely off its post where Ministers cars enter between Leinster House and Government Buildings

The State has spent more than €40,000 on temporary gates and repairs after the gates at Leinster House and the Department of Taoiseach were rammed by a van in August.

. A gate at the Attorney General’s office was also left lying off its hinges. “The Office of Public Works is carrying out an assessment of the historic gates in order to make the necessary repairs. The extent of this repair work is not fully scoped at this stage, therefore it is not possible to provide an accurate costing. Once the gates are repaired by specialist contractors they will be reinstated.”

In addition, a new security hut described as “very attractive” but the “size of a large mobile home” was built beside the Department of Finance and cost more than €1.4 million, the Office of Public Works said. A report on the shed also found that the OPW identified another more “cost-effective” location but this was rejected by the House of the Oireachtas Commission.
