Met Éireann issues a Status Orange Marine Storm Warning for Irish coastal waters, predicting storm force winds from Loop Head to Strangford Lough. The warning follows a wild weekend with Status Yellow wind warnings also in place. Thankfully, calmer conditions are expected for Christmas.

A status orange storm warning has been issued by Met Éireann ahead of an anticipated change in the weather and much calmer conditions in Christmas week. The national forecaster issued a Status Orange Marine Storm Warning from Loop Head to Bloody Foreland to Strangford Lough, which came into effect shortly after 5.30am on Sunday morning and will remain in place until midday.

Met Éireann says westerly winds veering northwesterly will reach storm force 10 on Irish coastal waters during the time the warning is in place on Sunday, with the affected area stretching from off the coast of Clare in the west all the way to the coasts of Antrim and Down in the north east. The warning comes after a wild Saturday night and Sunday morning in parts of the country, with Status Yellow wind warnings remaining in effect for Clare, Kerry and Limerick until 3pm on Sunday and for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo until 2pm. A separate Status Yellow wind warning was issued by the UK Met Office for all six counties in Northern Ireland at midnight on Saturday and will remain in place until 9pm on Sunday evening. The impact of the weather was felt in the village of Ruan, Co Clare, where a church spire caught fire and crashed to the ground in flames after it was struck by lightning in the early hours of Sunday morning. Thankfully, conditions are set to become a lot calmer for anyone travelling home for Christmas in the coming days, with Met Éireann promising a “relatively mild” week with “a lot of dry weather overall” and just occasional spells of rain and drizzle
