Punters were incredulous after Doyle, who “appeared to stop riding” 5-6 favourite No Retreat near the line and was beaten a short head, received no punishment

Racecourse stewards were accused of showing preferential treatment to top jockeys after a controversial ruling at Windsor on Monday night. All seemed to be going to plan when No Retreat emerged to tackle rival Brave Call 1f out and was pushed into a narrow lead.

However, to widespread surprise, the officials only noted the rider’s explanation that No Retreat had “jinked in the final strides on the run to the line, causing both itself and Doyle to become unbalanced, requiring him to get a hold of the horse’s head.” "I do 100 per cent feel for the punters that will have backed my horse and the connections of him too, but we are dealing with horses,” he said. "They're live animals and have a mind of their own.

"It's like he got spooked by the winning line. I'm not vigorous up to the line as I'm trying to stay on the horse – I'm trying to keep the partnership intact as best as I can. You can see right on the winning line he judders to a halt. That's what got us beat tonight. One punter raged: "The stewards are a disgrace. Protecting the top jockeys all the time. We all saw what happened. The horse only jinked when Doyle stopped riding. Didn't jink for 99% of the race when Doyle was vigorous on it."
