'The nation felt the impact of Storm Eowyn - but it's what I heard, that unique roar, that will stay with me'
It wasn't the screaming jet-engine roar of the wind that spooked me. The sustained high-pitched howl made sense - it was vaguely familiar.
There's nowhere more familiar to me than my home - so to be visited by something so abnormal... it's going to take a bit of time to shake that off. But imaginations didn't need to run wild. Just the noises around us were enough to put us firmly at the centre of the disaster movie playing out live within our own four walls.
My mind - in the clarity of Dry January but confusion of Storm Friday - tried to place every clap and bang. The clapping - I put that down to the polytunnel door. When that unwanted applause stopped, I put it down to the door taking flight. It transpired that was not the case - I discovered later it was the metal chimney cowl which had survived a previous Red Warning, but was liberated, bouncing three times before making landfall in a nearby laneway.
