Thousands could be without power into next week while 16,000 remain without water

The authority said it was made aware of several “potentially dangerous incidents” where members of the public had approached fallen power lines and structures.

A perimeter fence at Mace Head Met Éireann weather station was knocked down during Storm Éowyn. The station recorded a record wind speed of 183km/h on Friday morning. Ms Attridge also said that Irish Water was working with emergency co-ordination groups that had been set up by local authorities to support local communities.

She highlighted that the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme is available to assist households facing financial hardship due to storm-related damage. The scheme provides support for families as they navigate the recovery process and Ms Roche is encouraged all eligible households to avail of the assistance.

Living without power was difficult, Ms Connolly said, but living without water was much more difficult. People in the west felt there were two words to describe their situation, “forgotten and ignored”. Ministers will also discuss the Programme for Government commitment to introduce a new extreme weather event assistance scheme which seeks to help households, businesses, communities and farmers.has said an extra €30 billion will be invested in capital over the next five years and he will be seeking to ensure that this goes into rural areas.
