Ireland's record storm, Eowyn, has left thousands without power for days, with the ESB Networks chief admitting that full restoration may take weeks. The storm has caused extensive damage, costing the ESB 'tens of millions' and potentially leading to electricity price hikes. The ESB has ruled out financial compensation to affected households, stating that the government's Humanitarian Assistance Scheme is appropriate.

The ESB chief said: “This was a weather event that we haven’t experienced before in Ireland. These winds were the highest since records began. It was described as a weather bomb. It has done massive destruction damage; two to three times as much damage to the network as we’ve ever seen.” The Irish Mirror last week revealed that the ESB, which recorded profits over €800 million in 2023, has ruled out compensation to customers – and Hayes today reasserted this position. He said: “ payments do not apply to storms. The Government has a Humanitarian Assistance Scheme for customers who are out of power and have been impacted by that and I think that’s the appropriate way to do it.”
