There's rain on the horizon as the week progresses but sun worshippers are pinning their hopes on an area of high pressure returning for the forthcoming bank holiday

Rain is set to return and bring an end to the current spell of glorious weather, but there is hope that the sunshine will return in time for the forthcoming May Bank Holiday weekend.

However, that’s likely to change on Thursday, when outbreaks of rainfall will spread across the country from the west. A couple of cloudy, dull days will ensue, and the weekend is looking unsettled, damp and blustery. Weather expert Alan O’Reilly cautioned that this was still “very far away” in meteorological terms and therefore subject to change, but offers sun worshippers “some hope” as the current spell nears an end.

Rather clear and dry tonight but it will be chilly in that northerly breeze. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees with some mist and fog patches overnight too.A mix of cloudy periods and sunny spells in the morning but the cloud will continue to build through the afternoon. It will stay largely dry too in a light northerly breeze and highs of 11 to 15 degrees.
