Independent TDs appointed as super-junior ministers in the new Irish government will receive a generous pay and expenses package, allowing them to earn almost as much as the Taoiseach. This unprecedented arrangement includes retaining their current allowances, potentially pushing their total earnings to €243,280, just short of the Taoiseach's salary.

Independent TDs who are appointed as super-junior ministers in the new Government will be allowed to keep a €37,037 allowance meaning that, between pay and expenses, they could receive as much as the Taoiseach receives in salary.

They each receive a TD’s salary of €113,697, and will be paid an additional €62,046 as super-junior ministers. This would bring their total remuneration and expenses package to around €243,280 – just short of the Taoiseach’s salary of €243,895, and more than their senior ministerial colleagues who are full members of cabinet.

“We don’t need more wastage of public funds arising from negotiations with parties and individuals who have no significant policy or ideological differences. This is just them looking after themselves.
