At the Fianna Fáil think-in in Killiney, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said the Government must examine the prospect of sending children overseas for spinal surgeries.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has stated it is “shocking” that children were removed from a waiting list for spinal surgery and that they must be apologised to.
The Tánaiste, who is a former Health Minister, also suggested that more children who are in desperate need of spinal surgery should be sent overseas for their procedures.“It's shocking that any child would be taken off a list like that without any communication with the parents. That simply should not happen. It's not good enough.
“I have for quite a while favoured a combination of doing it here, within and exhausting capacity here. If the existing capacity here isn't sufficient to children who need surgery, we should have structured agreement with overseas facilities and hospitals to make sure that children get timely interventions, particularly for scoliosis or, indeed, urgent spinal and orthopaedic surgeries.
