An Irish Mirror investigation established that Garda bosses reinstated a full armed security detail when officers learned of a murder plot against Leo Varadkar in early 2022
Tánaiste Micheál Martin said that he was not aware of a foiled attempt to kill Leo Varadkar but that he knew that there were “threats” and “warnings”.
“I wasn't aware of a specific attempt on Leo's life, although he would have received warnings,” the Tánaiste said. “I’m not . In any situation, you've got to separate. The Gardaí will do that, in this case, they clearly have. The Gardaí would identify what we call real and substantive threats from a lot of what we get every day.
Mr Martin said that people are growing concerned about threats to politicians. However, he wouldn’t entertain if he thought there would be a situation where a TD would be killed, but said he hoped they would not be.
