Taoiseach Micheál Martin has been accused of taking advantage of Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy’s lack of Irish by accusing Mary Lou McDonald of “telling lies” as Gaeilge.
She also accused him of being “led by the nose by lobbyists” and “defending the interests of big property funds”. Mr Martin said: “Tá an Teachta Dala ag isint breaga aris”. This translates in English as “the deputy is telling lies again”. The Taoiseach shook his head in response and said he stated that “what the deputy had been saying was untrue”.
It is not allowed under Dáil rules to accuse someone of “lying”. Ms Murphy said: “I can’t rule on what I didn’t hear. I accept that you believe it was said.
