Taoiseach Leo Varadkar reassures Irish public over backstop ahead of UK Brexit vote
Leo Varadkar has doubled-down on the backstop and assured the Irish public that last night’s late night agreements in Strasbourg don’t water it down in any way.
Mr Varadkar made an emergency statement just after 8am this morning ahead of a dramatic day ahead in the House of Commons. The Taoiseach travels to the USA this morning to start the traditional St Patrick’s Day series of events, including meeting US President Donald Trump in the White House on Thursday.
This should help her sway some of the huge majority of MPs that voted against her deal in a humiliating defeat in January, the largest parliament defeat any British Prime Minister suffered in a century. “First, a comprehensive future relationship between the EU and the UK, second, specific solutions, or third, in the absence of specific solutions, regulatory alignment, i.e. the backstop.”
