Simon Harris also acknowledged that there is a requirement to “continue to monitor and review how to effectively police the far right”
The Taoiseach has stated the word protest has been “hijacked by a bunch of thugs” as he defended Gardaí's policing of anti-immigration demonstrations.
Asked at the launch of the LDA Affordable Housing Development in Shanganagh Castle, south Dublin, if he believed the documentary showed the Gardaí taking a “hands-off approach”, the Taoiseach said that the Gardaí should not be blamed for instances like the ones highlighted. “In that context, the reaction should never be able to blame the Gardaí. This is thuggery that the Gardaí had to confront. The Gardaí have been continually monitoring this and considering how best to respond to these situations. It is important to acknowledge that they probably further advanced their thinking on their operations since, perhaps, some of that footage was even filmed.
