Taoiseach Simon Harris has faced criticism from opposition parties for suggesting a link between immigration and the rise in homelessness. While acknowledging the positive contributions of immigration, he stated that it presents challenges, particularly regarding housing.

Taoiseach Simon Harris has been widely criticised by the opposition for “dog whistling” as he appeared to link a rise in immigration and a rise in homelessness.

Speaking in New York on Sunday, Mr Harris defended the remarks stating there was “no doubt that there is a link between the migration challenge we face and the homeless challenge”. International Protection Applicants and Ukrainian refugees are not able to claim housing supports, apply for social housing or avail of emergency accommodation. They are not included in the homelessness figures. The July homelessness report published in August shows that there were 10,028 adults living in emergency accommodation.

Some 177 households said they needed shelter after leaving Direct Provision. This included 169 “single households” and eight families. Another 37 were “newly arrived to Ireland”.
