This re-recorded 2014 album - and the five vault tracks - confirm that few pop stars can compete with Swift's effervescence as a songwriter

This re-recorded 2014 album – and the five vault tracks – confirm that few pop stars can compete with Swift’s effervescence as a songwriter, but its release, in the autumn of 2014, marked the moment she finally and emphatically moved on from her country roots and embraced pop. Her new re-recording of that album – part of her– confirms it as an LP precision-tooled to go supernova. It’s bright, brash, smart and catchy – a candy-coated steam-roller that rendered all resistance futile.

That Swift, then approaching her mid-20s, was coming into her own as a sort of pop Springsteen is confirmed by the five previously unreleased tracks sprucing up this new Taylor’s Version of. Together, they make for a fantastic mini-album. Swift has herself wondered how she ever allowed them to fall by the wayside.

As with all her best material, they are singularly Swift in their mix of vulnerability and confidence. They also confirm her knack for making the personal universal. When Swift sings, with what sounds like real pain, about “calling her mom” to talk about a useless ex on “Now That We Don’t Talk”, you’re there with her while she negotiates yet another dramatic break-up.tracks stand up, too. Opener “Welcome to New York” is a wonderful hymn to young adulthood.

The real question around this release has to do with timing. Have we topped out on Taylor? Nobody can get. I’ve heard of a friend of a friend who has one, but frankly, I don’t believe it – and many of us are fed up trying to convince ourselves the situation is likely ever to change. Sure, there’sNor is there much excitement to be had following her romance with Travis Kelce, whose name I obviously had to google.

It is a snapshot of an artist going places at the speed of light. We know where that journey would lead: to Ticketmaster meltdowns and Matty Healy becoming famous for 10 minutes in Middle America. How thrilling to travel back in time and watch Swift achieving lift-off all over again.Gaming
