The serial killer's cousin Edna Cowell Martin remembers one particular incident in her flat involving her roommate when he let his mask slip

The inconspicuous, terrifying red flags that a family brushed off while one of the world’s most notorious serial killers was killing dozens of women have been revealed.

Ms Martin spoke out about their childhood ahead of the publication of Dark Tides: Growing up with Ted Bundy. She has also shared letters they exchanged while he awaited execution on death row. After spending her teenage years in Tacoma, Ms Martin moved to Arkansas for several years but then moved back home to go to university, which brought her closer to Bundy than ever before. In a spine-chilling moment, she recollects seeing Bundy eyeing up her own roommate.

"I will never forget the look on his face. For a moment, I swear, I didn't recognise him at all. It wasn't Ted. His countenance was tense. Mean." She feels that was a moment when he let his mask slip and that he ran out the door after getting worried. This particular incident happened just months before his first known murder in 1974 - that of Lisa Ann Healy, a local ski reporter that Ms Martin said she had previously met.
