There’s a volley of opinion that Vera Pauw has been treated appallingly by the FAI, who decided late on Tuesday night not to renew her Ireland contract.

Agitated fans need to get over it. This is professional sport and it’s how male football managers have been treated for as long as we can remember. For a team to work, you need to keep 25-30 people happy. It’s no secret that Vera isn't universally loved within the squad but that’s not ‘player power’. I’m old enough to remember the build up to Euro 88, Ireland’s first ever appearances at a major tournament.

And then pulling the team off the pitch in the warm-up game against Colombia. What was that about! That’s not us. That’s not the Irish way. We live in a world where everyone from the dog on the street to the woman in Tesco wearing her pyjamas all have an opinion. Which is funny when you consider how players are actively encouraged to open up and show emotion away from the game if dealing with their mental health.

I can’t get away from it, it’s what I enjoy. Maybe I’m a sap, but we’re all saps in our own way. But people regularly ask me about the music and I won’t lie, it’s a lovely feeling.
