'The CPS is committed to tackling racial disparities' CPSUK

DISPROPORTIONALITY IS an issue which stretches across the criminal justice system – it has long been a huge concern for many, including myself. It is only through ensuring everyone is treated equally regardless of their ethnicity that the public can have faith that justice is being delivered.

Essential to this body of research is expert external scrutiny, which is why we have set up the independent Disproportionality Advisory Group , chaired by Susie Uppal and made up of academics, legal professionals, and third-sector specialists, who I trust to provide rigorous testing of our approach and instil confidence that the work is suitably focused and transparent.

As this work progresses, the DAG will provide expert insights into any findings and actions we need to take to address this. In July last year we published our Defendants Strategy to improve fairness in our decision-making, so that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence.
