That's no blob

Panopticon; a space or device providing a panoramic view. It is a phrase first coined by 19th-century philosopher Jeremy Bentham and is the inspiration behind a series of art sculptures dotted around the Lancashire countryside, including fascinating structure, The Atom.

The striking pebble-shaped landmark is constructed using ferro-cement and coated with metal-based paint. There was originally a metal sphere inside but that has since been removed while in particularly wet weather, the interior can fill with rainwater, creating a natural pond. The Pendle park, which is most famous for its strong connection to the Bronte sisters and widely thought of as the prettiest in the county, features stunning scenery, historic and quirky bridges, with one even understood to date back to Neolithic times. It is a landscape photographer's dream, with The Atom creating moody shadows and peep-holes windows to the patchwork countryside surrounding it.
