If you walk the shady paths of the Oak Hill cemetery in San Jose, you may stumble upon a group of five weathered tombstones all with the same date of death: May 26, 1896.
“If there was any family skeleton in the closet no one seemed to know it,” the San Francisco Chronicle wrote in 1896. But, as the world would soon find out, there was at least one big skeleton by the name of James Dunham. Soon, Hattie was pregnant. On May 4, 1896, son Percy was born, and 22 days later, Dunham set his plan into motion.Lance Yamamoto/SFGATECol. McGlincy, his stepson James Wells and a farmhand named George Schaible left for a grange meeting on the evening of May 26. Dunham knew they’d be there late, giving him plenty of time to work his way through the women of the house. He took a hatchet from the yard and loaded several rifles and pistols.
Downstairs, Ada McGlincy, who had been asleep in her bedroom, awoke. She opened the door to find Dunham, covered in blood, who struck her with the hatchet until she too was dead. Now, he had two hours until the men came home.Lance Yamamoto/SFGATE After a quick head count, Dunham realized he had missed two farmhands: Scheible and Robert Briscoe. He soon tracked down Briscoe hiding in an adjacent workers’ cabin and shot him dead. But Schaible was nowhere to be found.
The first person on the scene was a neighbor, who first heard gunshots and then the sound of hooves thundering past his house. After he raised the alarm, what felt like most of Santa Clara County descended on the ranch. There was no crime scene integrity in 1896, so civilians were allowed to walk through the ranch in horror. Every surface seemed covered in blood. They stumbled onto body after body. Six total, nearly the totality of the McGlincy household.
