Of all the sleeping beauties brought back to life at the 2024 Met Gala, it was the rib-crunching corset – worn by everyone from Kim Kardashian to Dua Lipa – that experienced the biggest renaissance.
Lots of unusual things happen at the Met Gala . Last night, for example, Rita Ora questioned whether the first and second-century beads she had acquired for the event might be older than anyone still alive on this planet, a billionaire salmon scion wore this, and at least three celebrities – among them Lana del Rey and Bad Bunny and Natasha Poonawalla – wore shoes that had been modelled on bewhiskered animal hooves.
The most drastic example of all this occurred when Kim Kardashian appeared in an organ-bruising Maison Margiela corset that had spectators questioning whether or not she could even breathe. These waist-cinching silhouettes had been a memorable feature in John Galliano’s couture presentation – staged in a wretched hinterland beneath the historic Pont Alexandre III in Paris – and behind-the-scenes photographs have since displayed the vast welts left on his models’s torsos.
