In a brief statement shared on Monday morning by the Holy See Press Office, it read: "The night went well; the Pope slept and is resting”.
On Sunday evening the official press office said the Pope’s condition was critical and he had received blood transfusions. Blood tests showed the Pope was displaying signs of "initial, mild” failure in his kidneys, but doctors said it was under control. Pope Francis is especially prone to lung infections due to developing pleurisy - an inflammation around the lungs - as an adult and having part of one of his lungs removed at age 21. During his 12 years as leader of the Roman Catholic church, the Argentine has been hospitalised several times, including in March 2023 when he spent three nights in hospital with bronchitis.
If the pope dies, it is typically up to the camerlengo to confirm the death of a pope. That position is held by Irish Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Traditionally, in the event of the pope’s death - and after doctors have declared him dead - Farrell reportedly visits the pope’s body in his private chapel and calls his name. If he doesn’t respond, it is tradition to destroy his signet ring and mark the end of his reign.
