Counting got underway in the Seanad elections in some panels on Wednesday, but counting to fill the majority of seats got underway in the Members Restaurant in Leinster House on Thursday

The first crop of victorious Senators was announced on Thursday, with tense and tight counts expected to last until Sunday.

Micheal McDowell became the first Senator to be elected on the University of Ireland Panel in the early hours of Thursday morning, with incumbents Rónán Mullen and Alice Mary Higgins winning back their seats in the afternoon. Labour candidate Sadhbh O’Neill, an environmental activist, was eliminated on the 10th count and her votes put Ms Ruane over the line.

A recount was called by Ms Chu's team on Thursday evening after count 15 saw her on 3,710 votes and Mr Carthy on 3,741, a difference of just 31 votes. This request will be assessed at 9:30am on Friday morning. Councillors, TDs and Senators have a vote in the vocational panels, giving an electorate of around 1,200.
