Donegal's last semi-final in 2014 was a sensational deposing of Dublin, Jim Gavin’s only defeat in Championship football
Donegal haven’t competed in an All-Ireland semi-final without involvement from Jim McGuinness in a playing or coaching capacity since 1990. They played in three of them in his first reign as manager and, in different ways, they were defining matches across that tenure.
Their last semi-final in 2014 was a sensational deposing of Dublin, Jim Gavin’s only defeat in Championship football, which had a profound effect on their tactical approach, effectively spawning the six-in-a-row. Padraic Joyce, McGuinness’s old Tralee IT teammate, oversaw Galway’s greatest victory since he was in his playing pomp last time out and replicating something close to that will be difficult, particularly with injury problems still apparent.
