Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan has not ruled out contesting the presidential election in 2025, despite being previously tight-lipped about his intentions. He mentioned his admiration for incumbent Michael D. Higgins and joked about certain aspects of the role.
The Irish Mirror exclusively reported earlier this year that the comedian was considering a run for the Áras in 2025, and had held meetings with incumbent Michael D. Higgins to discuss the prospect.
“Can you imagine?” he initially replied. “We’re lucky to have an articulate, caring, principled man in the Áras,” he added, referring to Mr Higgins.READ MORE: Exit poll results released, showing likely direction voters went in General Election 2024 Pressed further on the question, Tiernan reiterated: “We’re very lucky to have Michael as our president and I hope that, I know that the love of the people is important to him, and I hope he feels it.
In response to Tiernan’s answer, Patrick Kielty observed: “And that’s the Tommy Tiernan way of not ruling himself in or ruling himself out.”In August, a spokesperson for the popular comedian and chat show host told the Irish Mirror that he had “no comment to make on this” when questioned about rumours that he had held meetings with Michael D. Higgins about a possible run.
