Two individuals, a pedestrian and a motorcyclist, were tragically killed in separate road collisions over the weekend. The pedestrian, John Barry, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision in Cork, while the motorcyclist, Niall Keane, was killed in a single vehicle collision in Wexford. These deaths bring the total number of road fatalities in 2024 to 60, which is 18 more than last year.

Friends and relatives of Mr Barry have paid tribute to him with one person saying he “was one of a kind.” Another heartbroken pal wrote: “Can’t believe I woke this morning to the news that my best friend passed away last night. I am absolutely heartbroken John. I'll miss the phone calls and videos we send everyday to each other. I miss you load bud. You’ve a heart of gold. It’s really true what they say God does take the best cause there isn’t a bad thing anyone can say about you. You are one of a kind who will be sadly missed. RIP John, I love you forever buddy.
In a statement on Sunday morning, gardai said: “Gardai are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 1.30am on Sunday, April 7 on the N25 Eastbound at Water-Rock in Midleton, County Cork. “The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries. He was later pronounced deceased.
