Tributes have poured in following the sudden passing of a young hurler from Shinrone GAA club in Co Offaly. The club announced the death of Joe Cleary on Facebook on Wednesday. 'On Wednesday morning our club and community were devastated at the unexpected passing of our club man and team mate Joe Cleary - affectionately known as Joe Liffey. We keep the Cleary and Love Family in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

' The Shinrone Community page posted their tribute, stating: 'There are no words to describe the feeling of shock and loss that has enveloped our village since the word broke that Joe “Liffey” Cleary had left us yesterday. 'To Elaine, Hannah, Joe Snr, Bridget, Diarmuid, Shauna, Brian, Lorraine and Clodagh, all the Clearys, your Liffey Mills family, everyone in your GAA circle we offer our deepest sympathy to you all. Rest in Peace Joe, you will be missed dearly.' He became known as Joe Liffey on account of his job at Liffey Mills. They will close on Saturday as a mark of respect for his funeral. 'As A Mark Of Respect To Our Dear Friend & Colleague, Joe Cleary (RIP), Liffey Mills SHINRONE Branch will be closed on Saturday the 8th of February, and our ROSCREA branch will close at 11AM,' Liffey Mills posted on Instagram. Joe's funeral mass will take place at St.Mary's Church, Shinrone at 12 o'clock on Saturday, followed by burial afterwards in Kilcommon Cemetery, Shinrone. The family have asked that people attending Joe's funeral 'wear casual clothes to reflect Joe's young life.
