The individual behind "what appears to be an attempted assassination" on former President Donald Trump has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh.
Law enforcement officials confirmed the identity of the suspect to the Associated Press but spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation. The former president said he is " safe and well " after the incident and declared he will "always love" his supporters. Two law enforcement officials said the Secret Service opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach while he was golfing on Sunday.
