Tyrone McKenna, a Belfast boxer, shares his thoughts on the recent death of Irish boxer John Cooney, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a fight. McKenna acknowledges the dangers inherent in boxing and reveals how Cooney's death has prompted him to modify his training regimen, reducing sparring sessions to minimize head trauma. He emphasizes the demanding nature of boxing, both physically and mentally, and calls for greater appreciation for the sacrifices fighters make.
Tyrone McKenna admits he is still coming to terms with the tragic death of Irish boxer John Cooney . Galway super-featherweight Cooney died after suffering an intracranial haemorrhage in his fight with Welshman Nathan Howells at the Ulster Hall on February 1.
"I never met John, but anyone who knew him always said positive things about him. I know he was a talented boxer and on the rise. Unfortunately boxing is such a dangerous game. "You can't overthink these things, especially when you are a boxer like me. I get into war after war after war. And to see a kid who is at the start of their career, and see what can happen, then it does make me ask questions about the damage I am taking," he said.
McKenna believes the tragic loss of Irish boxer Cooney should remind fight fans of the dangers involved with boxing. It is entertainment laced with danger, a business where fighters push their bodies to the limit, physically and mentally. "Boxing is a very tough sport. And it's not just tough on the fight night, it is tough every single day for 10 weeks of camp.
