UK could see autumn Covid spike if new variant cases aren't monitored properly, experts warn

Experts have warned that although we shouldn't 'hit the panic button' just yet, the new variant could indeed contribute towards another spike

With overall Covid cases and hospitalisations beginning to increase again in recent weeks, multiple experts have also called for an increase in routine methods of surveillance and testing on both a national and global scale.

“While there is no evidence as yet to indicate we need to hit the panic button, it does highlight that maintaining a rigorous surveillance and variant-analysis capability is important,” Andrew Preston from the University of Bath said. “It’s clear we need a system that can not only surveil known pathogens but provide early detection of new threats,” Professor Preston continued. “WHO will need the proper financial support for this, with world leaders needing to recognise that a billion or spent is a massive cost-benefit compared to the trillions lost in the pandemic.”

At the national level, Professor Griffin from the University of Leeds said that he felt the Office for National Statistics’ Covid-19 Infection Survey should have been expanded to include other viruses, rather thanProfessor Sheena Cruikshank, from the University of Manchester, highlighted wastewater monitoring as another large scale and cost-effective means of Covid tracking, but one which has also been discontinued in England along with continued reductions in Covid testing in healthcare...
