The as yet unbuilt 34,000 capacity ground will be the centrepiece of Northern Ireland’s contribution to hosting the tournament given that Windsor Park, the IFA’s home, falls well below the 30,000 threshold.
Ulster GAA chief executive Brian McAvoy says that Euro 2028 games at Casement Park will be a “compelling symbol” of sport’s ability to unite people.
Just last weekend, Kingspan Breffni in Cavan hosted Ulster Rugby’s pre-season friendly against Glasgow Warriors, the first time that such an event had been staged at a GAA ground in the province. “As has happened with other GAA venues on the island in staging games from other codes, we will play our full part in helping to deliver a truly ground-breaking and inclusive tournament for the benefit of everyone.”
Last March, Jarlath Burns, who will become the next GAA president in February, said that he “would not be in favour of us giving one more penny to that”, echoing comments made by GAA director general Tom Ryan the month before. He added: "It’s not unreasonable that Belfast, Ireland’s second city, should have a stadium that would match Páirc Uí Chaoimh, which is our other second city.
However, Ulster GAA’s head of operations Stephen McGeehan has indicated that there may be wriggle room on the £15m figure yet.
