Former RTÉ newsreader Una O'Hagan has spoken about the kindness she received from her colleagues at the time of her son's sad passing, as well as voicing her support national broadcast amidst the RTÉ payment scandal
Former RTÉ newsreader Una O'Hagan has revealed her colleague and fellow newsreader Eileen Dunne stepped up to help her in a time of need.
"When my son Seán was sick, she jumped into the breach to do an awful lot of shifts. Other colleagues also really pulled out the stops for me. I couldn’t praise them highly enough."View gallery Una also said the recent RTÉ pay scandal was sad. "RTÉ has done an awful lot over the years. When you think of all the great programmes that have been made… but unfortunately, things have changed. Financially, it’s a different place.
"I was then lucky enough to get into a broadcasting course which was run in the summer of 1983. Because I was on the course I got word that RTÉ were looking for people – Radio 2 News in fact. I sent in a tape." The broadcaster and author admits she was terrified on her first day. While she had dreamed about it for a long time, she says she never thought it would come true. "But when you are that age, you’ve an awful lot of confidence in yourself. I just brazened it out. I was 21, I was the youngest in RTÉ for a short time."
However, she also covered lighter stories, such as the time Sonia O’Sullivan won a gold medal in the 5000 metres World Championships in Gothenburg in 1995. "We went down to Cobh, it was such an exciting time. That is what RTÉ does best, going out into the country and telling people’s stories. It was a great feeling, the country came together."She explained that the reason she left RTÉ was because she had gotten to the stage where she had done everything she wanted to do.
