University of Limerick (UL) secured a comfortable victory over Mary Immaculate College (MIC) in the 2025 Fitzgibbon Cup, advancing to the semi-finals. Despite missing key players, UL's superior firepower and determined performance proved decisive.
University of Limerick (UL) secured their spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 Fitzgibbon Cup with a convincing 0-23 to 0-15 victory over Mary Immaculate College (MIC). The match, played at a dry Mary Immaculate College , saw UL dominate from the outset, despite several key absences from both sides. UL's manager, Brian Ryan , was without Shane O'Brien, Shane Meehan, and 2024 Young Hurler of the Year Adam Hogan. Similarly, MIC's Jamie Wall faced a depleted squad, with several players missing.
The intensity in the game was somewhat subdued, perhaps due to both teams already securing a place in the knockout stages. UL's superior firepower was evident throughout the match. Gearoid O'Connor, Patrick Crotty, and Jack Leahy were instrumental in building a 0-14 to 0-6 lead at half-time, with all of MIC's scores coming from play. MIC's Oisin O'Farrell and Cian Scully managed to find the target in both halves for the visitors, but both were off-target from placed balls. Declan McLaughlin of Galway and Ronan Power from Ballygunner added respectability to the scoresheet for MIC, but UL's O'Connor was joined on the scoreboard in the second half by Mark Fitzgerald, Sean Rynn, and Sean O'Hanlon. Despite a generous allowance of 13 wides, UL's victory came after a string of ultimately decisive wins over SETU Waterford and ATU Galway. Ryan's men, who won the League title in December, are clearly aiming to go one step further than their 2024 campaign, when MIC halted their three-in-a-row bid. UL now enjoy a well-earned break until their semi-final encounter, while MIC will face a quarter-final clash against either TUS Midwest, Maynooth University, or DCU Dochas Eireann.
