These tours could show you a different side to the city
Among the popular sights and striking buildings that many of us are aware, there's also some lesser known tours that will show you a different side of the city.
From 1941, Derby House on Rumford Street was the headquarters of the Western Approaches Command Centre, which controlled the defences of British shipping during the Battle of the Atlantic. The longest continuous battle of WWII, the Battle of the Atlantic saw the Allied and Axis powers fight for control of the ocean.
These hidden gems have been preserved underneath Liverpool ONE and Merseyside Maritime Museum showcases them on their free tours. The Old Dock tours are available on Wednesdays, Fridays and every other Thursday and Saturday at 10.30am, 12pm and 2.30pm. Each tour lasts up to an hour. Shiverpool also leads visitors to the Wellington Rooms on Mount Pleasant where you may encounter the presence of a wailing woman, and to St James’ Cemetery and gardens where you will get the chance to discover secrets from the hidden Necropolis. The Hope Street Shivers tour, which is an immersive cathedral walk that takes in the Georgian Quarter and the Secret Garden, Liverpool’s Necropolis, is available to book now throughout the year.
