No More GMO: ‘Bioengineered’ Is the New Term Being Used for USDA Food Labels

The new changes can include “text, symbol, electronic or digital link, and/or text message,” according to the press release. For small packaging, a phone number or web address is acceptable as well.

Additionally, the standard does not require foods to be labeled as BE if the genetic material is not “detectable” or if one or more of the food’s ingredients comes from a modified plant, but doesn’t use the DNA from the plant. These may sometimes be voluntarily labeled as “derived from bioengineering.”
